Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade Watch House Museum is open for free from 10am-3pm Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays from Easter until the end of August.
The striking white wooden building right on the Spanish Battery contains the history of the formation of the very first Volunteer Life Brigade in 1864 as well as a wonderful selection of unusual items recovered from local shipwrecks including ships’ bells, figureheads and much more. Discover the stories of local heroes and rescues, and find out about the Life Brigade’s current shore-rescue activities.
From the top of the south tower, there is a near 360 degree breath-taking panoramic views of the entrance to the river Tyne. A camera also relays the view to a screen on the ground floor.
The ground floor is very accessible and the Volunteer Guides are always on hand to welcome visitors and tell some of the stories. It makes a wonderful outing on sunny days and in poor weather.
